My New Year wish for you!

Hey Reader,

As we start of a new year, I’m reminded that change is constant. Greek philosopher Heraclitus put it this way: “There is nothing permanent except change.”

And with any change, disruption, or transformation, there will be ups and downs along the way and these are perfectly normal and to be expected.

As you navigate the next 12 months, I assure you there will be no shortage of changes that throw you a curveball. So, your work isn’t the avoid change or resist it. Your work is to confront it head-on trusting you have what it takes to make it through to the other side.

One of the things that helped me appreciate this perspective was understanding that as long as I was doing good work, there would always be a demand for my time and talent.

Well, guess what? If you’re a mission-driven changemaker, you’re doing the good work. And given the volume and complexity of challenges we face today, I believe the need for what you do has never been greater. The world needs more of you!

So, the no-so-good news as you enter 2024 is the emails will continue rolling in. The phone will keep ringing. And the projects will still be there.

But the better news is there’s a way to navigate more skillfully what seems like non-stop change and disruption.

Dharma teacher Kaira Jewel Lingo in her book We Were Made for These Times describes it this way:

One of the things that can make navigating times of transition and challenge even more difficult is when we resist the changes coming at us or we think there’s something wrong with our life, or with us, when the road gets bumpy. We may believe that life is not supposed to be this way. That if we plan and prepare carefully enough, or act in a meticulously organized fashion, of follow all the rules, we can stay in control and our life circumstances will remain smooth and predictable. But transition and challenge are part of life.

You’re not broken. There’s nothing wrong with you. Yes, there are things happening in your life and work that are beyond your control.

BUT there are things that are within your control, including how you respond to what’s coming your way. In fact, you were made for these times!

As you embrace what’s next over the next 12 months, I share my New Year wish for you:

May you always have the courage to C.H.A.N.G.E.

May you always remember to pause and
connect with WHY you do what you do.

May you
honor your sacred priorities at home and at work.

May you
acknowledge and confront your deepest fears and doubts.

May you have the skill to
negotiate boundaries with ease and grace.

May you
generate the space to go within, reflect, and recharge.

May you
embody what it means to be a mindful changemaker in a world where the need for your time and talent has never been greater.

So, as you enter the next year, I invite you to embrace C.H.A.N.G.E.

Wishing you all the best and much more,

Meico

Hey Reader—quick question: how do you take care of yourself while changing the world? Seriously, how? And, no, it's not a trick question! It's something that's been on my mind a lot over the past few months as I've engaged in a series of conversations with everyday changemakers about how to care for ourselves while doing important work in times of uncertainty, loss, and disruption. These conversations resulted in the first season of the Dear Mindful Changemaker podcast, which wrapped up a few...

Hey Reader, A few weeks ago, I was interviewed for a video series about the U.S. Surgeon General's Framework for Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing. I joined work systems engineer Dr. Katherine Sanders to discuss practical ways to enhance workplace well-being, especially during difficult times or when there isn’t 100% alignment with your values and your organization’s mission. Watch the full interview here: https://youtu.be/2-a8ExjC5Nk We also discussed frameworks and strategies from my...
